Where our figures come from, how we calculate them and where the limitations lie.
Where does the data come from?
Railwise analyses publicly available timetable and real-time data from several sources, including DB Timetables APIs, GTFS and GTFS-RT. For every long-distance train, we match scheduled and reported times, platform changes and cancellations, stop by stop.
Railwise is an independent service and is not affiliated with Deutsche Bahn.
Which trains are included?
We cover long-distance services: ICE, IC, EC and selected international trains such as FLX, NJ, RJ and TGV.
Regional trains (RE and RB), replacement buses and special services are not currently included.
How we calculate the metrics
- On-time rate: A stop counts as on time when the train arrives less than six minutes late. Cancelled stops are reported separately.
- Average delay: The average difference from the scheduled arrival or departure time across all observed stops.
- Cancellation rate: The share of cancelled stops among all expected stops.
- Platform changes: How often the reported platform differs from the scheduled platform.
The large figure on each detail page is always the on-time rate. The other values provide the context needed to understand overall reliability.
How does the Reliability Score in the app work?
In the app, many connections have a Reliability Score from 0 to 100. It summarises how dependable a connection typically is and goes beyond the standard six-minute punctuality threshold.
The score starts with historical arrival performance on the selected section. One or two minutes of delay has only a small effect, while longer delays reduce the score more heavily.
Cancellations reduce the score further. For journeys with a transfer, we also account for how often that connection has been made in the past.
As a rule of thumb, 80+ is usually very stable, 60–79 is mixed, and below 60 is noticeably riskier.
Time period and updates
All analyses use the last 30 days and are updated hourly. This keeps the figures focused on recent performance instead of a distant annual average.
Routes and stations
Routes are derived automatically from the actual stop sequences observed for a train. We use the most frequent recent variant.
Station variants such as “Berlin Hbf (tief)” are grouped under the main station to keep the analysis clear.
Network status
The network overview shows how reliably individual sections of the long-distance network are operating, based on observed delays over recent weeks.
What we cannot capture
Our data is only as complete as the railway’s real-time information. Missing or delayed reports can create gaps.
Short-notice timetable changes can cause the plan and actual operation to diverge. We show what was reported in the source data.

Railwise is provided for information only and does not replace official information from transport operators.
Despite careful processing, the displayed data may contain errors, gaps or delays. We do not guarantee that the figures are accurate, complete or current.
