Railwise is an iPhone app and a website for rail passengers in Germany. They show live where a train is, and how punctual a train, a connection or a transfer has been over the last 30 days. Railwise analyses public timetable and real-time data stop by stop, and is independent of Deutsche Bahn.

The app

  • Live status

Delay, platform and next stop, also as a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, with the saved seat.

  • Punctuality before booking

Route search shows how reliable each connection was over the last 30 days, and every single day behind that figure.

  • Transfers

Railwise shows whether a connection is likely to work and how often it was made before.

  • Commuter mode

For the trains you take every week: Railwise checks the next day’s timetable each evening and only alerts you when something changes.

  • Travel Log

Every journey is kept with the route the train actually took, with statistics, time lost and trophies. Synced through iCloud.

  • Import from DB Navigator

A trip shared from the DB Navigator app arrives with exactly the trains that were booked.

For data journalists

What we measure

Source
Mainly Deutsche Bahn’s open timetable and real-time data (licensed CC BY 4.0).
Unit
Every single stop of every run, aggregated by train, route, station or period.
On time
Less than six minutes late. Cancellations count against the result; missing data never counts as on time.
Scope
Long-distance and regional trains at more than 4,800 stations in Germany, without S-Bahn. railwise.eu shows ICE, IC and Flixtrain; analyses for newsrooms can include regional trains.
Comparability
The figures are not directly comparable with DB’s official statistics. With every analysis we state exactly what was counted.

Full methodology and limitations

Analyses we can provide

  • Punctuality of a train, route, region or station over a period
  • Comparisons between federal states, stations, times of day and weekdays
  • Before and after: engineering works, line renovations, heat, strikes
  • Cancellations, partial cancellations and platform changes
  • Delay reasons as given by DB

Tell us your question and deadline. We send figures with the method and the period, and on request exclusively.
